It`s time for another one of these posts that actually don`t fit into the context of my blog. Since I do find one or two of these every few months I decided to call them OOCs or “out of context” from now on, so don`t worry ! Well be returning to Portugal in the next post 😛
It`s been around 20 years since my little home country started diplomatic relationships with one of the, for me, more interesting cultures on our blue marble. Japan aka “Nippon”, the land of the rising sun or in freeride terms powder heaven :P.
Because of that the Japanese embassy in the Republic of Slovenia, The Japan Foundation, the Library of Maribor an the Slovenian Anima fanclub SloAnime invited Mitsuhisa Ishikawa, the founder of one of Japans premium production houses PRODUCTION I.G to give a nice lecture about anime in Japan.
PRODUCTION I.G at times employs more then 500 in staff and is one of the best original anime production studios in Japan mostly known for the Blood, xxxHOLIC, Tsubasa Chronicle anime as well as Appleseed, Patlabor, Ghost in the Shell from Mamoru Oshii based on the manga by legendary mangake Masamune Shirow.
Next to talking about the general relationship of animation in Nipponese contemporary culture Mr. Ishikawa also explaind the inner workings of a big animation production house in Japan and also noted the many basic differences to European and American animation production, with a focus on the relationship between basic 2D animation and 3D integration all the way to composting and the future role of mocap and roto in Anime production workflows. It was interesting to see how the production has stayed relatively fixed in light of the massive changes we have seen in recent years in the west for postproduction and animation workflows, and the capability of telling adult stories trough drawn films. The Lecture concluded with a nice hands on Q&A and even a small audition from a girl who wanted to become a Nipponese voice talent 😛
Next up was a special screening of the second Ghost in the Shell film Innocence from 2003. If you like animation you will most probably know this film but if not check the trailer higher up and the directors thoughts before the screening. All in all a great way to spend the evening !
