Two years back when I became a regular subscriber to the skiing magazine I got a little present. Next to a very cool TSG Bag that now carries my mobile workstation I also got a little tool from Ortovox called CHECK AND RIDE. It`s a very simple idea. A small rod that you can twist and turn according to the avalanche report and makes oh so forgetful me not forget the conditions and the daily tendencies.
Another thing it also allows is for instant danger assessment on terrain based on the daily tendency and steepness. It also comes with a little Compass that might look like a gimmick but in total whiteout proves to be a very useful tool to at least get you somewhat safely to the treeline. Honestly said first I thought that it was just some marketing gimmick but after some time it really grew on me. And on top of that it really looks cool. That`s why I deiced to include a little Check and Ride rating for every report. Its basically gonna be just a picture of the set up CHECK AND RIDE so that when you see the rest of the pics or videos from the day, you will be able to compare the report to the actual conditions we were in. It`s gonna look kinda like this 🙂
Warning Level 3 – Danger Tendency rising in lower areas under 1800m – Exposition All N to SW
On a sad note I just read that Sarah Burke has passed away after her bad Fall in the X-Games training. She was doing what she loved most. Rest in peace…
