A few days back a friend of mine called me and told me that I was on some commercial for the Kanin-Sella Nevea Skiresort. It`s the Slovenian freeride mekka and is known mostly as one of those secret spots. There is a vibrant little local community in the town of Bovec who in the summer also run a Bikepark.
The timing was kinda funny because just before new years I had a shooting at the location as part of the Bovec Outdoor Filmfestival – short BOFF. Rok and Petra from Vertical Adventures Slovenia together with the organizers of the filmfestival ran a 3 day workshop for avalanche safety. Since I planed to film a short 3 parter for safety this season I was happy to also get a nice refresh on procedures… in case of emergency. I also took a few pictures and was happy that Maja from the resort put them on their facebook fanpage.
Since the Freeride Battle contest at Kanin is now a official stop in the FWT -Freeride World Tour with 3 stars, I got a little nostalgic and remember my first Freeride Battle contest way back in 2008. I still have the Salomon Foil skis I had back then and they still shred nicely on crusty conditions, even after almost 5 years.

2008 was an awsome snowyear for Kanin and I remember that we had to wait three days for the contest to start and the day before we had one of the best powderdays ever on the Sella Nevea side. Back then the two resorts weren’t connected yet and you had to drive over the Predel pass to get to the Italian Gondola. I dug trough my archives and found these pictures that my friend and career photographer Peter Fettich took of me 🙂

Times have changed a little and I didn`t get to ride the contest anymore after that. But as a Photographer I did manage to snap a few nice pictures last year at the 2011 edition of the venue.
I remembered how cool Kanin is to ride and that it would really be nice if it got some snow… so please Mr. Arlberg can you spare some 😛
