42 People searching… one word impressive |
Finally that day had arrived, two months have passed since my operation and it was time to go back on skis and hunt for some pow. Remarkably, for April another weather shift had come into effect, and the temperatures droped for another 15° over the course of two days. For the Alps. That meant that another sudstau had come to pass. The predictions were spot on. It promised us another 30 to 50 cm of fresh powder. And right they were. The morning cleared up and we were looking at perfect bluebird weather. Getting up at 5.30 in the morning and driving for 2 1/2 hours we arrived at Mölltal. The ski resort at 3000 m is the highest in Carinthia and also offers a nice starting point for longer tours to the Grossglockner massiv and descends towards Sportgastein an Heilligenblut.

20 minutes later 😛 |
Being very early we arrived among the first on site and what presented itself to us, was kind of amazing. 30 cm of fresh powder or even more, had fallen on the previous days in the ski resort. Thanks to bad weather, the upper part of the resort had remained closed. The grumours were still tracking and the lift just started working so we had a first perfect run.
Our Avalanche training put to good use 🙂 |
Unfortunately, it didn’t stay like that for long. After about 20 min the entire left face had been tracked. On the lower part there were signs of triggered avalanches and of something that from distance looked like a snowboard. Mountain rescue and a lot of people were gathering to try to figure out if anybody had been buried. Of course immediately after seeing that we joied to help. We searched the entire perimeter up-and-down forming longer lines and using our probes to try to pinpoint any possible burial. The assessment of mountain rescuers was that the person who might have been buried probably wasn’t using a beacon. Two helicopters had flown in but, because of the wind, were unable to land at our location. After about 45 min we were done probing and it was decided that it was a false alarm. All in all, I counted 42 of us powder hunters helping the presumed rescue. We finished off and wanted to go on a little break suddenly a snowboarder on the right above us triggered another avalanche. Fortunately, that one went to the far right and the snowboarder got out of it unharmed.
Middle Right – The new part of the resort. Lots off coluars and tons of fun drops 🙂 |
After a few more runs they also opened the new quad chair on the other side of the resort. Now we had to hurry if we wanted to get some more fresh powder. It was already late and the power of the sun took its toll on the snow which was starting to get heavy. After a few more runs, we decided it was enough and went on to do the other thing one does when you are at Mölltal : soak up some sun.
It turned out to be a great powder day, especially if you consider that it’s almost middle of April. My shoulder and my collar bone, surprisingly didn’t give me any trouble at all. So I consider myself fit for easy riding without any extensive drops. Kickers are going to stay a no-go for a while still.
Pridni. Tako se dela to!!! Pomoč nad vsem drugim. Bravo
