Unexpected Kühtai

At the end of the day… perfection

The alarm goes off. I turn around and turn it off. I repeat this a couple more times. I finally drag myself out of bed and look out the window. It’s raining. Great. Means the temperature really did go up above freezing point, and it even started raining in Innsbruck. I think to myself, crap and it’s already 10 AM. Thinking this is going to suck I pick up some food from the refrigerator and make breakfast. While eating I think to myself, if it’s raining here, there is got to be some new snow somewhere. I call Aljosa, who still sleeping and doesn’t even pick up. I drag myself to the local shopping mall and finally get myself a BOB Sim card with a local telephone number. At least from now on I won’t be paying shitloads of cash just to call someone.I also find a parking ticket on my car.. awesome !

I get back, eerie, and start checking the local WebCams. The day before, we were still talking about going to Schlick, but the Webcam shows a crappy picture. I check out Kühtai, a little resort, that was also the host of last year’s youth Olympics freestyle disciplines and is not far from Innsbruck. Guess what, it’s snowing. I wake up Ziga and  the girls, who are somewhat done for from partying all night, and within 15 min, only two of us leave for powder. Yes hangovers can be a bitch sometimes.

I want one of these !
The OE3 pistenbully catarpillar was at the resort on the
next day ! More flyers XD

The drive up to the resort is not promising at the start. It’s raining even more now, the road is wet, and the snow is melting. A few kilometres up the rain is turning into slush and the road is getting clobbered. Five more minutes and were stuck. Time to put on the snow chains. Hopefully there are going to hold, since they are already fucked up from last time.

My fucked up snowchains

Luckily with practice this time around it only takes a few minutes to put them on. After another 20 min, yes it took us about an hour to get to Kühtai… We finally arrived at the resort. It’s still snowing heavily and there is quite a nasty cloud cover over the entire area. Happy that it’s not raining any more, we take up the chairlift, and hope for the best.

Bluebird moving our way 🙂

The first line shows us, that the new snow, around 20 cm, is really good. Unfortunately the weather was so bad that we couldn`t see anything. We decided to head for the side with the trees. On the second run, I notice a little bit of blue sky, heading in from Hochsölden. I think to myself, now wouldn’t it be nice, if the blue sky stayed. For some reason unbeknownst to me, within 20 min, the weather clears up the sun comes out, and we have an entire untracked resort for ourselves. It’s so hard to believe, that I have to send a picture to our lazy sleeping friend in Innsbruck, because he just won’t buy it without evidence. The one thing left, is to grab a nice beer at the local Irish. Sweet success.

The final run in sunny twilight !

Next up we hastily deciding to go visit Pavli from the snowboard.si page, and now local resident at FISS, so stay tuned. Some of you might have noticed, that FISS, had been very avalanche prone for the last couple of days, so we would have to be very careful. Here a few before and afters from Kutai XD
